Machakos: Eastern Kenya City Guide
Guide to Machakos — people's park, Akamba carving centre, and eastern Kenya travel. Day trip from Nairobi or overnight stop on the road south.
Machakos is the administrative capital of Machakos County in eastern Kenya, 65km southeast of Nairobi on the main road to Mombasa. It sits at approximately 1,600m in the Ukambani highlands — cooler than the plains below but warmer than Nairobi. The town is the cultural heartland of the Kamba people, Kenya’s fourth-largest ethnic group, and has been a centre for woodcarving and artisan craft since the colonial era.
For travellers, Machakos functions best as a half-day excursion from Nairobi or a practical stop on the Nairobi–Mombasa road journey. The Akamba Carving Centre is reason enough to stop.
Getting There
From Nairobi: 65km via the Mombasa Road — approximately 1–1.5 hours. Matatus depart regularly from Nairobi’s Railways stage (near the CBD) and cost approximately KES 150–200. Shared taxis (7-seater) are faster and more comfortable at approximately KES 250–350.
By private car: Take the A109 Mombasa Road out of Nairobi, exit at the Machakos junction (signed). Parking available throughout the town centre.
Things to Do
Machakos People’s Park — a large recreational park on the northern outskirts of town, developed by the county government. Features walking and jogging paths around an artificial lake, boating, children’s play areas, and open lawns for picnics. Entry approximately KES 200 for adults, KES 100 for children. Open daily 7am–7pm. Popular with Nairobi weekenders on Saturdays and Sundays — quieter on weekdays. The lake section has pedalos for hire at approximately KES 300 per 30 minutes.
Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative — the most significant cultural attraction in the region. The Kamba are Kenya’s master woodcarvers, with a tradition stretching back centuries. The cooperative, founded in the 1960s, employs hundreds of carvers and covers several acres on the edge of town. Watch carvers at work producing everything from small figurines to large statement pieces, then buy directly in the showroom. Prices are fair and negotiable — significantly better than Nairobi curio shops for equivalent quality. Good selection of animal carvings, Maasai-themed pieces, and abstract art.
Mua Hills — the rocky hills above the town, rising to approximately 1,800m, offer hiking with views across the Athi Plains and back toward Nairobi. No formal trails — access by boda-boda to the lower slopes (approximately KES 100–150), then on foot. A local guide is useful. Bring water and sun protection. Best in the morning before heat builds.
Machakos Catholic Mission — one of Kenya’s oldest Catholic missions, established by the Holy Ghost Fathers in the 1890s. The mission grounds and original buildings are historically significant and open to visitors. Entry is free; a donation is appreciated.
Kalamba Market — the main weekly market on Mondays draws traders from across the region. Good for local produce, textiles, and the general energy of a rural Kenyan market day.
Where to Eat
Machakos town centre has several basic local restaurants serving ugali, nyama choma, and stewed dishes at KES 150–350 per meal. The central market area has the best concentration.
Machakos Country Lodge restaurant is the best mid-range option — reasonable food in garden surroundings, with main courses from approximately KES 600–1,500.
Where to Stay
Mid-range (KES 4,000–9,000/night): Machakos Country Lodge is the most comfortable option in the area — a long-running property with gardens, a swimming pool, and straightforward rooms. Reliable for an overnight stop. Kilambe Country Club is another mid-range option with similar pricing.
Budget (KES 1,500–3,000/night): Several guesthouses in the town centre offer basic but clean rooms. Machakos Highlands Hotel and Rondavel Guest House are functional choices for budget travellers.
Practical Information
Climate: Machakos sits below 1,000m in parts of the county but the town itself is at approximately 1,600m — pleasantly warm rather than hot (average 22–28°C). The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) bring green landscapes and sometimes muddy roads in the surrounding countryside.
As an overnight stop: Machakos is a practical choice for breaking the Nairobi–Mombasa road journey. It adds no distance — the junction is directly on the A109 — and the town has good facilities including banks, petrol stations, and supermarkets for provisions.
Market day: Monday is the main market day in Machakos — the most atmospheric time to visit the town centre.
Photography: The hillside setting above the plains makes for good landscape photography. The Akamba Carving Centre allows photography of the carvers at work.
Day Trip vs. Overnight
Day trip from Nairobi: Machakos works as a comfortable half-day excursion. Depart Nairobi by 9am, visit the Akamba Carving Centre (1.5–2 hours), walk or boda-boda to the People’s Park for lunch and a walk (1.5–2 hours), return Nairobi by 3pm avoiding peak traffic.
Overnight stop: Useful when driving the full Nairobi–Mombasa route over two days. Machakos offers a comfortable stop with mid-range accommodation, then an easy drive to Mombasa the following morning — arriving at the coast by 10am rather than the 4–5pm arrival typical of a single-day Nairobi departure.
