Mombasa Carnival

The Mombasa Carnival is Kenya’s coastal answer to carnival traditions found across the Indian Ocean world. Held annually in November, it draws performers and audiences from across the country and the wider East African coast. The centrepiece is a street parade through Mombasa town featuring elaborate costumes, marching bands, traditional dance troupes, and floats - a mix of Swahili, African, and global carnival influences that reflects the port city’s layered history.

What happens during the carnival

The parade moves through central Mombasa and past the Old Town’s historic Arab and Portuguese-era buildings. Participating groups spend months preparing costumes and choreography. Categories in the parade typically include traditional community groups performing taarab, chakacha, and lelemama dances, alongside more theatrical carnival-style entries with elaborate headpieces and sequined costumes.

Beyond the parade, the carnival week includes beach parties, live music at venues across the island, cultural exhibitions, and a food festival that leans heavily into Swahili coastal cooking. Grilled fish, biryani, mahamri, and coconut-based dishes dominate the stalls.

The Old Town setting

The historical backdrop of Mombasa Old Town adds a dimension that makes this carnival different from a city street fair. The narrow coral-stone streets, carved wooden doors, and 15th-century Fort Jesus nearby create a visual context that is genuinely striking when full of carnival colour. Fort Jesus itself often hosts events during carnival week.

• Date: Usually the second weekend of November; check the Kenya Tourism Board or Mombasa County events calendar to confirm the 2026 date
• Location: Mombasa Island - the parade route runs through the town centre and Old Town
• Entry: The parade and street celebrations are free to watch from the roadside; specific concerts and venue events may charge entry
• Getting there: Mombasa is served by Moi International Airport with daily flights from Nairobi (approximately 1 hour). Alternatively, the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) runs from Nairobi to Mombasa in approximately 4.5 hours.
• Accommodation: Book ahead - carnival weekend is one of Mombasa’s busiest. Hotels in the town centre and beach resorts along Nyali and Bamburi are popular bases.
