Nairobi International Trade Fair

The Nairobi International Trade Fair, organised by the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK), is one of the oldest and largest annual events in East Africa. It runs for 10 days at City Park Showground in Nairobi and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The fair is part agricultural exhibition, part industrial trade show, and part community festival - a combination that has made it a fixture on the Kenyan calendar since the colonial era.

What the fair includes

The showground is divided into sections covering livestock, agriculture, horticulture, manufacturing, consumer goods, and services. The agricultural pavilions are among the most popular, featuring prize cattle, horses, pigs, and poultry alongside competitions in flower arranging, baking, and horticultural display. Kenya’s farming sector is large and commercially sophisticated, and the livestock competition classes attract serious breeders from across the country and the region.

Commercial exhibitors range from major Kenyan corporations and government agencies to small enterprises and artisans. International pavilions typically feature embassies and trade offices promoting goods from Europe, Asia, and other African countries. The range is genuinely broad - you might walk from a stand selling seed varieties to one demonstrating industrial machinery to a government agency running a jobs information stand.

Entertainment runs throughout the fair, including musical performances, cultural displays from Kenya’s ethnic communities, and activities for children. Food stalls and restaurants operate across the showground.

The visitor experience

The Nairobi International Trade Fair is primarily a Kenyan domestic event rather than a tourist attraction, which makes it an interesting window into the country’s commercial and social life. Entry is affordable and crowds are family-oriented, particularly on weekends.

Weekday visits are calmer and easier to navigate; weekends and the final few days see the largest crowds. The showground is large enough that a single visit can reasonably take 3 to 4 hours.
